WASHINGTON—On Oct. 1, the U.S Supreme Court declined to hear the mining industry's challenge to a 20-year ban on new uranium mining near the Grand Canyon. In 2012, under Barack Obama, the U.S. Department of the Interior issued the 20-year ban that protects a million acres of public land near the Grand Canyon. The ban was upheld by the Arizona Federal District Court and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Native American communities and environmental groups see the high court's refusal to hear this case as a victory, effectively keeping intact the appeals court decision that the ban is legal and will remain in place.
