President Shelly Statement on the High Court’s decision regarding Indian Adoption Case

WASHINGTON—Navajo Nation President Shelly issued the following statement regarding today’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling in the Adoptive Couple v. Baby Girl, a highly anticipated Indian Child Welfare Act case.

“The high court’s split 5-4 decision limited, but did not eliminate, the Indian Child Welfare Act. The Navajo Nation continues to support Dusten Brown and the Cherokee Nation as this important case returns to South Carolina, “ President Shelly said.

The Navajo Nation, a federally recognized sovereign tribal nation with more than 300,000 citizens, filed an amicus brief in this case citing the importance of the Indian Child Welfare Act and the direct impact any determination made by the court could have on its sovereign rights, as well as those of its members.
